Email...

...I went to middle school with this guy named Andrew Wright...long story short I always believed, personality wise, he was the white version of myself. He left our school and for years I didn't see the guy. We even lived in Atlanta at the same time during the college days but never hooked up. Turns out we both became artists. Anyway, I sent out my Monday email to the G.E.E.K. crew (an email just to inspire the week ahead...to create their art) and this is some of what he wrote back...brilliant, talented dude.

***

"....good to read positive energy and know that others are following the same path through whatever resistance we take. Our paths as artists are not easy, but we take those paths because for some of us we have no choice. It's what keeps us sane, gives us meaning, purpose, or whatever in a world where we pay bills by working a job that means shit to us. The art is what matters. It's what inspires. It's what makes us feel like we are human, different, involved, justified, heard, respected, self-respected. It let's out aggression as much as it let's out intellectual thought. Is there really a difference between the 2? I personally believe aggression drives our intellectual processes forward. We have a message that we want others to hear because it inspired us. That message changes, but such is life, and we grow with it. But we need to be heard. The collaboration movement with other artists makes you feel like you BELONG, yet standing out is still a beautiful part of the scene. Keep it going, David, this road will never get old to me, and you have me and my company's full support in your endeavors. It's late(or early depending on how you look at it), sorry to write you a book, I have been up all night..... Got 80 cans of spray paint waiting for Wednesday... Stay up bro, I know you are, and I look forward to your emails every week, each one has made me do something. Peace-Love"

When sports become art...

...if you didn't know me and followed this blog, you probably would have no idea how much I was into sports (maybe I should start a sports blog). I had to post this oop from Mike Bibby to Josh Smith because it's like art on a bball court...the feeling of throwing that perfect oop and the crowd not seeing it coming...and then the sound of their exuberance....totally priceless.

Astratto

Astratto is my personal art week taking place the first week of December...read more about the concept, history and the motivation behind the week after the jump.
I feel like if you're an artist, there are times when you should shut out most of the regular day to day life, and focus on your art.
Earlier this year I was suppose to travel overseas but the trip fell through, so instead of trying to go somewhere else, I figured I would take the time off and focus and appreciate my art and the art around me.

During the week I plan on doing a lot of shooting, writing, editing of the novel, playing music, making music, visiting museums, going to see live music shows, drinking Jameson and whatever else I feel like doing artistically.

But the idea of Astratto is not primarily for me...it's more so for anyone who believes in art...a week to create something, even if you have not created in years. A week to appreciate something that is truly universal and that brings different cultures from around the world together, as one.

Astratto means 'abstract' in Italian. I chose the word abstract because I think everyone sees art individually, and so, everyone has an individual abstract view of art. I chose Italian because the second part of my life is coming in the next few months and I will be leaving my 20's and crossing over into 30 in Italy.

You have to understand, I find that completely amazing because I grew up in humble beginnings and still know people that live in my old neighborhood that have yet to see the ocean.

During the week of
Astratto, create something beautiful for them and for all people, so that they can see the world through your art.

What I'm reading...

What am I reading?

Revolutionary Suicide by Huey P. Newton

Description from publisher: Eloquently tracing the birth of a revolutionary, Huey P. Newton’s famous and oft-quoted autobiography is as much a manifesto as a portrait of the inner circle of America’s Black Panther Party. From Newton’s impoverished childhood on the streets of Oakland to his adolescence and struggles with the system, from his role in the Black Panthers to his solitary confinement in the Alameda County Jail, Revolutionary Suicide is smart, unrepentant, and thought-provoking in its portrayal of inspired radicalism.

The More: Like most coming of age stories dealing with young Black men, this book details how the transformation from boy to man (when you are a Black man in America) is directly linked to society and society's view of you and people that look like you. Like Malcolm X, Newton finds his transformation in reading and learning on his own. This is a great book for any young man (of any color) trying to find a resolution to their inner turmoil or trying to find their true self...plus it's just a good read. Peace+Love

Peace

peace
by david stuckey

it's hard to believe peace is real.
that peace is even a reality.
with the wars.
and the shootings you see on the news.
and just the hate you experience from everyday life.

But every time I see one thing.
it makes me remember that peace is obtainable.
that the impossible is possible.

And it's something I see all the time.
And that simple something?
It's old Black people.

I'm not talking old, like 45 (that ain't old fyi).
I'm talking, 65-70, 75, 80, 80+ year olds.
Skin looking like polished oil.
Eyes brown like dirtied almonds.
Hair grey as troubled nights.

once I asked my mother about race in chattanooga.
when she was younger.
and she said...you know...you really just didn't go on that side of town.
blacks stayed on one side.
whites on the other.

my grandmother came to dc once.
and we were sitting outside the national cathedral.
just us two.
and we talked about life.
and she told me how you just did not look at white people when she was a child.
that she really didn't look into a white person's eyes until she was a grown woman.
and grown as in like, 30.

i see old black people.
and i know what they went through.
what they saw.
what they couldn't look at.
where they couldn't eat.
who they couldn't vote for..
where they couldn't go to school.
or work.
who they couldn't love.
i remember they had all these cants.

but 9/10 times these old Black people i see and talk to and know.
damn...they are not bitter.
that was life.
and life is what it is now.
don't get me wrong, remarks are made within the Black family.
but most of the time...for these old Black people.
there is a respect for human kind no matter the color.
even though for most of their lives, their color deemed them inhumane.

and when i see these old Black people.
and they smile.
and remember without malice.
and love just the same.
as if hell was not their upbringing.

if they can love everyone no matter what...
...after what they had been through?
then although I have my doubts.
i know peace is real.
even with the wars.
and the shootings you see on the news.
and just the hate you experience from everyday life.
I know peace is real.
I know peace is obtainable.

I believe in peace.

Wouldn't it be dope....

I was talking to @erinita18 the other day (again with people yawl don't know..lol) and I was telling her the artistic vision (some of it). And I was saying how dope it would be to be able to following your favorite musical acts around the world for a month or two....go see Grizzly Bear in Canada, shoot to L.A. to see Mos Def, travel to Prague to Coldplay...etc.etc. Well this conversation started because I saw Janelle Monae's tweet (follow me @stuckeywriter) about her performing in the states one day and heading to London two days later to perform. Then, just now I look up and see a video of her performing 'Smile' in London...it's kind of cool how this life, blogging and art thing intertwines. Peace+Love

Jamie x Gucci

What a lot of people don't know about me is I grew up listening to the most obscure Southern Hip-Hop artists. Artists I can't even remember now but was exposed to when hanging with the neighborhood crew. So when I hear something that reminds me of those days...I'm going to post it for nostalgia. This joint reminds me of me and my boy El rolling in his Cadillac booming something with a lot of bass and stopping in Boone Heights projects and him hollering at girls while I manned the tape deck...the younger bro's job..lol. Check the song here. Peace+Love

B.

I'd like to think of myself as someone that looks at things differently. Especially when it comes to culture during my lifetime. I certainly have a lot to learn about the past and cultures of the world...but when it comes to the present, I'd like to think I have a grasp and/or different/objective approach to describing what's going on artistically.
Which leads me to this video I am posting. This Thanksgiving, Beyonce Knowles will have a special in prime time. The show will consists of performances and behind the scene footage of her getting her shows together. But here's the thing...looking at this differently as I did Lil Wayne a while back...I'm not sure if people look at Beyonce in the way they should. I'm not saying you have to like her songs, I'm saying I like her songs really...I'm saying in culture, you have certain figures...and for whatever reason, some figures get more 'praise' than others. Now, Beyonce wins a lot of awards and she sells out shows....but B, if you think about it...she's something else...a different level...when you talk about performance...she's one of...no...I'm going to say it...she is the greatest female performer of my generation (L. Hill just stopped too soon). I honestly do not know of anyone with her voice strength in our generation. The point is...when it comes to performance we are witnessing something the world has never seen. You add her voice to her style to her influence on pop culture to her dancing..and there's really no comparison. And when it comes to performance...she may not have the pipes like Aretha or the original moves like Tina or the soul of Mary or the uniqueness of Lauryn Hill...but what separates her is that when she moves, performs, dances, jumps, shakes, etc....her voice actually becomes stronger in a way not accustomed to performers that actually 'move' on stage. For example, I think Jazmine Sullivan has one of the great new strong female voices...but if she danced around while singing? Not so sure how that would sound, feel me? But B., with each move, her voice actually emulates her bodies groove with an equally satisfying tone in her singing. It's what separates her in the realm of performers this world has seen. I look at all art, all music and try to step back and actually view what I see before me....I'm just saying...think about it.

What I'm reading...

What am I reading?

The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo

Description: Brazilian storyteller Paulo Coehlo introduces Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who one night dreams of a distant treasure in the Egyptian pyramids. And so he's off: leaving Spain to literally follow his dream.

The More: The description above does not give you the most important aspect of this book. It's literally magic. As a writer I used to think the perfect book was one written that every single person could relate to and gain something from. However, now I believe the perfect book is one that changes a social setting. This book is maybe the closes thing I've read to my first 'perfect book' revelation. But beyond relating, this books speaks to everyone and anyone looking for that 'treasure' out of life, no matter what or who that treasure may be....pick it up. Oh and one more thing...as a person who grew up in a two-religion household, this book speaks to me even more because the beliefs of the characters are Christian and Islamic...and you sorta realize (if you analyze the book like I do all works) that we are all the same no matter what you call god or even if you don't call him/her at all.
