It traces the journey of Black America from the kingdoms in Africa to the many challenges and triumphs of becoming equal in America. A great read for anyone (of any color) wanting to know a true history of the Black American. A must read.

My best of list for the year that was....2012? We'll see what she brings.

Book - Open: The Autobiography of Andre Agassi
--> It was actually the last book I read this year. Agassi has always been my favorite tennis player growing up because of his style and return game. His book is not just about sports, it's about growing, changing, evolving and the many many people you meet during that journey.

Album - Nostalgic, Ultra by Franck Ocean
--> Of course this was a hard choice for the the fact that I believed Watch the Throne was a great album as well as the jazz feeling Undun by The Roots. But Ocean's first offering was a breath of fresh air and he really established himself as a song writing force in music. Another tidbit, the album was released on my birthday.

Song - A Case of You by James Blake
--> This is actually a remake but Blake put his hunting voice on the poetic lyric sheet and I think made a very special piece of mood music.

Movie - Drive
--> The acting. The what the f*ck factor. The music. If you saw the film, you know exactly what I am talking about. Ryan Gosling did his thing and Cary Mulligan was just ... you could just bake that woman cookies at 4am. Action, comedy, awkward silences, Los Angeles...just check it out if you have not.

TV Show - Modern Family
--> The show is just up to date and laugh out loud funny show in the same vein as Will & Grace in its modern concept (no pun intended). The sitcom has a little cult following so it could be around another 2 years or 10 years. I'll be laughing until the end.

Documentary - Being Elmo
--> The story behind the man that created one of the most iconic characters of all time. A great story about following up on your dreams. A must see.

Place Visited - New York City
--> Of course I've been to NYC a million times before but this year I really fell back in love with the city. From a picnic in Central Park with an ex-love to milling around Manhattan and Brooklyn finding, and becoming a regular in some great bars in the city. Epic nights, epic nights.

Live Show - Lauryn Hill at New Orleans Jazz Festival
--> I know she has been sketch in the past but Ms. Hill put on a 2-hour show for her 'return.' She redid most of her hits which to me gave it a real nostalgic feeling of a true performer. Plus, I am a die hard Ms. Hill fan.

New Blog - EVERYTHING YOU LOVE TO HATE
--> I think the guy that runs this photography blog is a California based artist. He just post some really cool images, mostly of interesting women and random awesome stuff.

Let me explain the title. I think an artist. No. I believe an artist should always have much more than the world sees. Even if their world is just a few people. With music, I think this is an easy thing to see. Like when Pac died and you had 170 more albums come out after his death. And once, years back, Justin Timberlake was on 20/20 (jesus my memory is ignant) and he played this song on piano that was clearly about Brittiany Spears...and I wish I could find the clip but, to me, it was probably the best thing I'd heard dude sing and he stated that no one would ever hear that song again. It just had to be created, not really for an album. But what about painters and writers and performance artists. You have to realize that what you see is probably a very small amount of their work. Because by the time you've seen it, you haven't seen the throw away lines or canvases. I was cleaning up a week ago and found 3 books of writings. And when I say books, I mean 200 page journal type books with poems, unfinished songs, story plots, etc.

Hadn't seen any of those things in years. Didn't know they were even in the house. But that's what happens when you are constantly in a different world of writing and creating. You don't create for a purpose, you create because it is your purpose. So, you see, for an artist, it will always technically be quantity over quality. The struggle is showing the world what is special within all that girth.

...was not as cool as it sounds. Actually, it was pretty lame. I went to the ABFF back in 2005. Great time by the way, and surprisingly tons of people I knew were there without me even knowing. Anyway, Ms. Ross hosted this short film competition and from my seat I was like...she's so tall. The next day me and my friend Taren (oh where are you Taren) were standing in line to see an early screening of 'Hustle & Flow,' when out from the theater comes Ms. Ross. I said hello (and I think I even waved..lol) and she waved back and said heyyyy. Beautiful natural woman...and she's very short...surprised me. After cheesing, I turn to Taren and she just laughs at me....hilarious.

The best band in the world does it again. 'Undun,' is a freaking masterpiece....sounds like an old jazz album. Just 39 minutes of magic...reminds me of 'A Love Supreme,' in it's perfect time elapse. The Art Dealer...

Its come to me, after three decades on this planet something about my family, my immediate family. My mother has always been the art dealer. My family, before divorce, before college, etc. was a house of me, my father, mother and older sister. My dad, sister and I were the artists. My mother was the art dealer. An art dealer's job is not just to sell art. They give an artist a place to lay their heads, they nurture their artistic ventures, stroke their egos and construct an environment where artists can find themselves.

My father was the musician. Always playing his guitar, practicing all day. When my dad lived in the house all he did was play the guitar, read and pray. In that order. And as feisty as my mother is, as quick as she can be to curse you out or laugh in your face, not once do I remember her telling my father to put down that damn guitar. Not once.

My sister was the artist. I would doodle something and it would look like a doodle. She would doodle something and you wondered how something could be done so fast. It has always confused me where this talent came from, probably the most natural of the artists. Cause my dad played music his entire life, years of practice and performances and I write a lot so of course every once in a while I will write something special....but my sister's talent was just kinda...there. God given? But my sister was reluctant with her gift. She never majored in art or took it too seriously. She reminded me of this kid that lived in my neighborhood who could shoot like Larry Bird. But in 8th grade when I made the team he didn't make the basketball team at his school. How? Because he said when he got on the court he couldn't calm down, he got too nervous. He wasn't mentally prepared. My sister could paint like Picasso but mentally she just didn't want to paint like him...maybe not paint at all.

And then there was me, the writer. I've always been a writer, even when people didn't know I was a writer but me. In theater class, it's funny that my friends probably never realized that I "suggested" the script for every small performance my group put on...I was writing what the scene sounded like, every single time. When music came out my mother would let me go to midnight sales to be the first kid to have it...at 10,11,12 years old. And I would BLAST my music in my room and we lived in a small house. And no matter how loud I played that music, not once did my mother tell me to cut it down. Because that's not the art dealer's job, to cause disruption when art is being made, heard. I remember once very vividly, I was maybe 12, and I came into the living room and my mom was on the couch watching television and I had this song I wanted her to hear that I was playing on my saxophone. I asked her if I should come back after her show. She said no...to play it. And I play this song and I sound like complete shit, and my mom is just looking inside me and sipping on her beer (lol) and when I got done I asked her did that crap I just played even sounded like the song? And she says: Yes. She didn't go bat nuts saying how her baby could play the sax and she didn't hammer me and say, wow, did you kill a bird just now? Note: My mom will talk cash shit about you. LOL. Her answer was simply: yes. Because an art dealer doesn't always praise or destroy, they let the artist find the answer themselves.

This art dealer revelation came when looking at the bookmark my sister sent me a few months back. It's not exactly a bookmark but I made it one...and maybe I will share later...but it is basically a small card (perfect bookmark shape I think) telling me not to go crazy...literally crazy...no conversation before she sent this...she just randomly sent me this...because an artist knows what's going on with another artist, especially one they lived in the same gallery with for years. And if our talents only reach a few or a few million, we are kinda lucky we grew up with a tough art dealer.

So I'm checking my man Rashidi's tumblr, Honor Thy Tailor, to see what's new in fashion and saw a post about him and his new bride (that's them above in photo). This led me to him and his wife's joined tumblr (Deishidi) and on to their wedding photos (hey it's 3am I might as well right?) Although me and Rashidi went to the same college I didn't meet the cat until (ironically) we attended a wedding of a mutual friend in Atlanta. Very laid back, eclectic, stylish cat. If you check their blog you will without a doubt be mesmerized by the love these souls have for one another. It's a wonderful thing. And their wedding photos...by far the best I have ever and may ever see in this lifetime. Best friends turned lovers turned husband and wife...a total inspiration. You can tell that their styles compliment each other and they can travel and do crazy things together like true friends. That's what it's all about man. Congrats again brother.

PS - They are both Clark Atlanta Alum and got married on campus...too dope!

The best cab driver works in D.C. Being a cab driver is just his side hustle. He also drives town cars for big politicians during special events. I rode in this man's cab one night a couple weekends ago off Georgia Ave. I am positive that he was off duty for his light was off and I noticed his dry cleaning hanging in the back seat. And after taking this cab from my house down to Pennsylvania, I am pretty sure the only reason I was picked up was because of the Fedora I was wearing. It started off like a regular cab ride. His radio playing great old soul tunes. Him tapping his hand on the steering wheel. He asked where me and my friend were going and we told him just to catch a show. Then he started to school me on the radio station he was listening to...they play oldies at this time, jazz at this time, the lunch time hour has this and politicians talk about current events on this day. I shook my head and gave him 'oh reallys,' and 'you don't says.' Now, for my friend it was probably like a 'what the hell' moment. But for me, this happens to me everywhere, anywhere and every time. The saying in my family is 'there is no such thing as strangers, only friends you have yet to meet.' He asked us where we were from and said how he used to go to Memphis and eat and dance and what not.

"Those some pork eating fools down there," he said.

Then he told us about his explorations around the globe. He had been everywhere twice. Puerto Rico was a favorite spot, New York, Chicago. Him and his buddies used to go down to New Orleans and party all night at Fat Domino's little club. Then he gave me the prices for round trip airfare across the world. Paris, $95, New York, $25, California, $45. These prices made me sick!

"You better bet it," was his saying (that I am totally stealing).

He dropped us off on Pennsylvania down the street from the theater. He said he would take us on down but we told him we were going to this little bar to have a drink first.

"That's what I'm talking about...young people should have a good time...get you a little buzz going."

Then we shook his hand and asked his name: "Hercy, Cab 101, you better bet it."

Yep. You better bet it.
